How do I figure out this proof?

I am having trouble on where to start with this proof. I don't want it to be solved but rather, I would like to be told how to ';attack'; it.





1) If Peter dates Alice, Ben will be jealous


2) If Peter dates Cynthia, Ben will not be jealous


3) Peter goes to the disco or he dates Alice


4) If Peter goes to the disco, he will not meet Elaine


5) Peter dates Cynthia





Prove: Peter did not meet Elaine





I know how to setup this problem I am just having trouble proving it. Can somebody help me out?How do I figure out this proof?

2) True, thus ben not jealous (pointless info)


3) We know he does not date alice, so must go to the disco.


4) We know he must go to the disco, so he must not meet Elaine

well, because peter dated cynthia, ben was not jealous (and because of that he couldn't have dated alice)





because he didn't date alice, he must have gone to the disco. because he went to the disco, he didn't meet elaine.

WHOA!!!!. just reverse the list and the whole thing should make sense.
Start with 5. If 5 is true, 2 is true. 2 implies that 1 is NOT true. Use the fact that 1 is not true in 3 - this implies that he goes to the disco.


4 states that if he goes to the disco he will not meet Elaine, therefore 4 is true and he does not meet Elaine.
I am assuming Peter did go to the disco #4 is the proof.
Peter dates Cynthia(5) so Ben will not be jealous(2), since Ben is not Jealous then Peter did not date Alice(1) since Peter did not date Alice, Peter goes to the disco (3) and so Peter will not meet Elaine (4)
