How do biologists figure out the hardness of a rock??

How do biologists scratch a rock meaning how do they figure out whats the hardness of a rock??? Plezz i need your help!!! Thanks:}How do biologists figure out the hardness of a rock??
Wrong profession, but whatever. They use these porcelain tiles. They scratch the tile with the rock and they can tell how hard it is by how much residue it left on the tile. Or the simple way is to scratch it with your fingernail, if that doesn't scratch it, then use a penny, if that doesn't work then use a metal nail. How do biologists figure out the hardness of a rock??
By hitting it with other rocks.
When 2 objects are rubbed against eachother the harder object will scratch the softer object. Diamonds, the strongest thing on earth will scratch glass. Diamonds are also used as tips for drilling through rock. Also density can be calculated. Density = Mass/volume
Biologists don't study the hardness of rocks. That's geologists. They use tools that have tips of various materials. They find the softest tool that will scratch the rock, and they record the number of that tool as the hardness.
Geologists test hardness of a mineral by seeing what it will scratch and what will scratch it. For example, steel is about 6 in hardness, fingernail is about 4, etc.
