I'm a senior in high school and I know nothing about college! please help.Who can help me figure out Financial aid?
There is a great US Department of Education publication that explains the financial aid system. You can read it online here: http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/attach鈥?/a> or you can ask your school's college advisor or guidance department for a hard copy. It's called ';Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid';.
You'll learn what kinds of aid are available - who is eligible for the different types of aid - how much money you might receive - and how to apply. You'll also learn about non-government sources of aid, like scholarships, and what to watch out for, so you don't get caught up in some kind of fraudulent or criminal 'scholarship' scam.
It's very important that you learn about the federal government's aid programs, because they are, far and away, the number one source of financial assistance to US college students. Many new college applicants are not aware of just how prevalent government aid is - more than 2/3 of all college students receive federal student aid.
I guarantee that you'll know a lot more about the aid system when you've read through this brochure - be sure to pass it on to your parents, too, because it also has info on forms of assistance that are available to help your parents contribute to the cost of your education.
Good luck to you - I hope this helps!Who can help me figure out Financial aid?
You fill out a FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and if you don't want to worry about loans you take the check mark out of the box that asks if you want to see if you qualify for loans, and they'll automatically apply your information towards getting a pell grant (it's like $4,000 and you NEVER have to pay it back), there's also scholarships and other types of grants you can get those you don't have to pay back either, try to stay away from loans if you can, if you go to a community college a pell grant is more than enough to cover the cost of tuition and books. go down to your local community college or whatever college you are planning on attending and speak to a financial aid counselor. Also, if you are planning on going to a trade/vocational school make sure to research the school like crazy so you get the best education at the proper cost. Also if you are low income you can go to jobcorps.dol.gov and they do training for free and you get to live on campus and it's completely free, they supply everything and give you a little bit of spending money and have locations all over the country and will pay for your transportation to the location. I have had friends that have gone through it.
