I go to Ancestry.com but it costs money and my parents dont really care much about this. But anyway where can I make a family tree for free on a website that really works and gives you facts about your heritage.
Also I figured out a name of an interesting relative I have but I dont know where I can look up his parents, spouse, and children????
Please help.
ThanksHow do I figure out my ancestors and genealogy?
If you are interested in doing this, but your parents aren't, check with your local library. They would not only have books on how to do the research, they may be able to put you in touch with local historical or genealogical societies who would be able to give you some help. The librarians could also help you with information on city, county, state, and family histories by and about people in your area.
Talk to your grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins about what they may know or what they may have already researched. For those who were born, lived, and died in your area, you can go to the county clerks office and ask what records you could look at, and if you can take photos of the pages. If you can't take photos, they may make copies for a nominal fee.
The problem with using already established family trees you find on line is that you cannot be sure that it really is your family. When you start researching, you find that there can be many people in this country with the same name, all alive at the same time, and some even living in the same area. That is why it is important to get all the names and dates you can from your older family members. You can then research that information and get the documentation on persons you know are in your family, then look at family trees online and do some comparisons. Family trees online have been put there by people just like you; some have done a lot of research, and done a lot of documentation; others have done little.
Understand that this is a time-consuming process and you will not learn everything quickly and easily. Some items of information may take years to find, and some may never be known. How do I figure out my ancestors and genealogy?
I'm interested in my family heritage as well. Sorry to say, but the internet never really works for finding your ancestry. You can look up your surname meaning and places of origin for people with your surname at http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/defa鈥?/a>
but you said you already been there. What I can suggest is that you go to a grandparent or something. They may know more than you think and might have a family history book (My grandma has one and I love it. XD) But yeah, that's all you can really do. I'm German and I know some sites that give me an idea of my heritage. But I don't know if you're German, lol.
The Mormon Church is very interested in geneology, and have the best resources.
